What community-led growth actually means
Deepak Kumar · 5 min read
Community-led growth has become a phrase people put in a deck. Then they open a Discord, post twice, and wonder why nothing happened.
Here is the honest version. You have community-led growth when your members create value for each other that you could not create for them, and when that value is the reason new people arrive.
The test
Leave for two weeks. Say nothing. If the room goes silent, you don't have a community — you have an audience that was waiting for you to perform. That's not a failure, but it's a different business, and it needs a different plan.
Three things that decide it
First, who's in the room. A hundred people who need the same thing at the same time beats ten thousand who followed you for entertainment. Curation is not elitism; it's the difference between a conversation and a comment section.
Second, a reason to return. Not content — a reason. A weekly table. A monthly review of each other's work. A standing question. Something that has a time attached to it, because unstructured goodwill dies quietly.
Third, visible reciprocity. People must be able to see that helping here gets noticed. The moment help becomes invisible, it stops.
What growth looks like when it works
It's slow, then it isn't. Members start bringing people who resemble them. Your best case studies are written by other people. Sales conversations shorten, because the person on the other side already met three of your members before they met you.
The mistake is treating community as a marketing channel to be filled. It's closer to infrastructure. You build it, you maintain it, and the growth is a side effect of it being genuinely useful to the people inside.
If you want the long version, it's a whole book — I wrote one called Anyone Can Build a Community, which is where most of this comes from.
I speak and run workshops on exactly this. Invite me to your event, podcast or team — or read more about what I do.
