All exceptional outcomes are social outcomes

I have one line I keep coming back to, and everything else I do sits underneath it: all exceptional outcomes are social outcomes.

Big, rare, meaningful results don't happen in isolation. They happen because people come together — because someone made an introduction, because someone stayed after the talk, because a group of people decided to keep showing up for each other long after the reason to do so had passed.

The lie of the lone builder

The story we're sold is the solo one. One founder, one artist, one obsessive in a room. It reads well and it is almost never true. Pull on any outcome you admire and you find a web: the friend who funded the first month, the stranger who shared it, the community that gave the work its first hundred honest readers.

I've been on both sides of this. The years I worked alone were the years nothing compounded. The years I built in the open, around people, are the years where the same amount of effort produced something that kept moving after I stopped pushing.

    What this means practically

If outcomes are social, then relationships are not a soft skill sitting next to the work — they are the work. That changes what you spend your week on. You stop optimising only the product and start optimising who is around it.

It also changes how you measure. Followers are a vanity number. The number that matters is how many people in your world would take your call, and how many of them talk to each other without you in the room. That second number is the community. The first is just an audience.

    Where it leaves me

So I build communities, study them, teach them, and talk about them. I run DNA, where the people I've met over the years now sit in one room together. I host a dinner every Friday for nine people from nine different fields. I write about what works and what quietly fails.

None of it is charity and none of it is networking in the business-card sense. It's the most reliable strategy I've found: get the right people into the same room, often enough, with no agenda, and the exceptional outcomes take care of themselves.

I speak and run workshops on exactly this. Invite me to your event, podcast or team — or read more about what I do.
